Hallowed Be Your Name
But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, "Be holy, for I am holy." 1 Peter 1:1516
What does it mean when we pray, "Hallowed be Your name"? The word "hallowed" means we are to attribute to God the holiness that is already His. We are saying, "Lord, I want You to rule over every aspect of my life. I want You to be glorified and honored in everything I do."
When we pray, "Hallowed be Your name," we are saying that we want to see God exalted in what we do in our lives and character. It means we want to live holy lives. The Bible says, "But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, 'Be holy, for I am holy' " (1 Peter 1:1516).
Therefore, we must ask ourselves periodically, as we look at our interests, ambitions, and pursuits, "Are these things for His glory? Could I write 'Hallowed be Your name' over them? Could I write 'Hallowed be Your name' over my career choice? Could I write 'Hallowed be Your name' over my business decisions? Could I write 'Hallowed be Your name' over the friends that I choose or the mate that I choose?" If we cannot, then it is questionable whether we are making the right choices.
Martin Luther said, "How is God's name hallowed among us? When both our doctrine and living are truly Christian."
Is that your desireto live a holy life? May His name truly be hallowed in our lives today.
