Han Solo Spinoff Movie in the Works, Phil Lord and Chris Miller to Direct
Disney recently announced that they are working on another "Star Wars" spinoff film, this time focusing on the life of smuggler-turned-hero Han Solo. This new spinoff film will be added to the list, which already includes "Star Wars: Rogue One," which is already in the works.
The announcement comes with news that the studio has already found the right man or men to helm this next film. According to a report in Variety, Chris Miller and Phil Lord, who also directed "The Lego Movie" and "21 Jump Street," have already been signed on to helm this next "Star Wars" project.
The standalone film is being written by Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan. Lawrence Kasdan has a long history with the "Star Wars" franchise, having written "The Empire Strikes Back," "Return of the Jedi," and most recently "The Force Awakens." Jon Kasdan, aside from being Lawrence's son, has written independent films that came out at the Sundance Film Festival as well as a handful of TV series.
The movie's story will focus on how Han Solo "became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi" met at the cantina in Mos Eisley. It will be a look into his life story. This movie, according to another report in The Hollywood Reporter, is different from the other spinoff that Josh Trank was supposed to work on before he quit.
Miller and Lord in a statement shared what they thought about the movie.
"This is the first film we've worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us."
Miller, in his early days, was an intern at Lucasfilm and also played one of the many Stormtroopers on set.
"We're so excited to be working with Chris and Phil, who will bring a fresh new dimension to the 'Star Wars' universe. They're two of the smartest, funniest and most original filmmakers around, and the ideal choice to tell the story of Han Solo, one of the coolest characters in the galaxy," they continued.
Kathleen Kennedy will produce the film, with Will Allegra co-producing. Lawrence Kasdan and Jason McGatlin are executive producers.
Disney announced that the film will be released in theaters on May 25, 2018.
