'Hawaii Five-0' Canceled After Season 8? Showrunner Peter Lenkov Writing 'Magnum P.I.' Reboot
Is CBS pulling the plug on "Hawaii Five-0" after season 8? The network recently tapped showrunner Peter Lenkov for a big task as he will be writing the planned "Magnum P.I." reboot.
Lenkov brought his "Hawaii Five-0" writer and executive producer Eric Guggenheim on board the return of "Magnum P.I." Lenkov also serves as showrunner on "MacGyver" and he'll have a full plate handling three shows.
Fans of "Hawaii Five-0" wonder if this signals the end for the buddy cop series starring Alex O'Loughlin (Steve McGarrett) and Scott Caan (Danny Williams). It's possible, however, for Lenkov to pass on his duties as showrunner on "Hawaii Five-0" if it's renewed for season 9.
"Hawaii Five-0," however, remains a solid performer in the ratings among other CBS shows and despite its most recent cast departures. There's a good chance it will get another season since it's still a strong contender on CBS' Friday night block.
Meanwhile, the network has not provided any more details as to the production of the "Magnum P.I." reboot but it's speculated for a 2018-2019 TV season debut. The original series about a private investigator residing in Hawaii aired from 1980 to 1988 and starred Tom Selleck.
In other news, there will be no new episodes of "Hawaii Five-0" this Friday, Oct. 27, because of another CBS Halloween special. Regular programming will return on Nov. 3, with the episode "Kama'oma'o, ka 'aina huli hana" (At Kama'oma'o, The Land of Activities).
Grover (Chi McBride) will be preoccupied on a case that has hounded him for years. The Five-O team, on the other hand, will be investigating a series of murders that have been patterned after a Hawaiian folklore.
"This one is probably our more grounded and scarier episode than we've done in the past," Lenkov told Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming Halloween episode. "It's based on Hawaiian ghost stories and it's pretty raw and pretty scary."
"Hawaii Five-0" airs Fridays at 9:00 p.m. EST on CBS.
