Hawaii High School Shooting: Officer Stabbed, Runaway Teen Shot in Honolulu

A Hawaii high school shooting occurred in Honolulu at 8:30 a.m., local time, which resulted in one student being hospitalized. The incident began when a 17-year-old student attacked a police officer with a knife; the officer shot the teen in the wrist, but during the ensuing lockdown, parents did not have access to their children.

The Hawaii high school shooting took place at Roosevelt High School in Honolulu. Major Richard Robinson was attempting to arrest an outstanding runaway when the teen "became combative," authorities said in a press conference. The teen managed to stab one officer in the bulletproof vest, wound a total three officers with minor injuries before a cop shot the student in the wrist.

Two people were hospitalized, local reports stated, though it isn't yet clear who the other party is. The 17-year-old is in stable condition, according to The New York Daily News.

The two shots fired resulted in a school wide lockdown, with parents and students attempting to reach each other by cell phone because the children weren't allowed out. Roosevelt high attempted to assuage the tense situation with a text message to parents and guardians.

"The situation at Roosevelt is under control," the text read. "The Honolulu Police Department is wrapping up their investigation. Again, the situation is under control. Please remain calm."

12 police cars responded to the situation at Roosevelt High, which has about 1,400 students.
