Henry Cavill News: 'Man Of Steel' Adopts A Bat, Calls It Ben

Back in September, "Man of Steel" actor and Durrell Global Ambassador Henry Cavill paid the Durrell Wildlife Park a visit to learn more about the Livingstone's fruit bat, a species that is in serious risk of extinction in the wild.

The British actor met and fed several of the bats, including one named Claudia, in their enclosure. He took some photos of the bats before receiving a certificate from park officials, who thanked him for supporting their cause.

And it seems that after spending some time with the creatures, at least one of them made a real connection with the 32-year-old actor. "You heard it here first, I have officially adopted Ben … the Bat!" Cavill says in a video posted to the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust YouTube channel.

The Livingstone's fruit bat (also known as the Comoro flying fox) is a megabat that can only be found in a few islands in the Comoros, in the Indian Ocean. It can grow to about 12 inches in length and has a wingspan of up to 1.4 meters.

Livingstone's fruit bats are in danger of going completely extinct, which is why Cavill's involvement in conservation efforts for them is a big deal. The actor became an ambassador for Durrell in 2014. On Wednesday, a link was posted on the actor's Cavill Conservation website for fans who want to follow Ben's adoption and Cavill's other conservation efforts. Those who wish to support the initiative can purchase "Adopt Ben the Bat" adoption packs for $78.

Cavill is known for having a soft spot for animals. In January 2014, the "Batman v. Superman" actor adopted an Akita (that he later named Kal-El) with then-girlfriend Gina Carano. Cavill has also spent time with the lemurs at the Durrell Wildlife Park and was the first to adopt Durrell's gorilla family.

Cavill's "Man of Steel" will return in the much-anticipated "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice," which is scheduled to be released on March 25, 2016.
