Here Comes the W3D, the First Gaming Smartphone

Mobile gaming has become hugely popular, especially with the advent of smartphones with faster processing power and better displays. Every year, new smartphones are coming out with better specs than the ones that came before them, but no smartphone has ever been designed specifically for mobile gaming until now.

A new smartphone is coming and it's going to be the first one that is designed with gaming in mind. Called the W3D, what is surprising is that it's not being made by the big phone companies like Samsung and the like. A Chinese company called Snail Mobile is taking the plunge into mobile gaming with this new handset.

According to a report in Tech Times, the company is preparing to launch the new phone on Sept. 29. The W3D does not look like any ordinary smartphone. The first difference is that it comes with analog sticks, face buttons and built stereoscopic 3D. Better controls for gaming seems to be the first thing that the phone tries to address. It looks more like the Sony's PlayStation Vita, with "dual analog nubs, four face buttons, a directional pad, a set of bumpers on the back side of the phone."

Under the hood, it is powered with a 64-bit octa-core MediaTek 6595 processer and 2 GB of RAM. Internal storage is at 16GB which is naturally expandable through a microSD slot. Its display is a 5.5 inch screen with 1080p display. What is impressive according to the report is the phone's glasses-free 3D visuals.

To power such a phone, it has a huge capacity battery at 4,200 mAh. It is also equipped with two microUSB ports which can be used for simultaneous media transfer and charging. The phone's rear camera is a 13 megapixel one, while the front camera is a 5 megapixel one.

The phone's success as a gaming phone is however dependent on game developers and whether they will in fact develop games that take into account the new and extra controls that are available on the W3D. But if developers start getting into the action, this new phone may just give Nintendo a run for its money.

The new phone is available for pre-order for a hefty price of $400.
