Heroic Mom Risks Paralysis to Save Toddler, Jumps Three Stories to Escape Apartment Building Fire (VIDEO)
As a fire raged through her apartment building, Christina Simoes of Haverhill, Mass. found she and her 18-month-old son Camron were trapped. The hallway was blocked and she saw only one way out.
"I just knew we were either going to die or we were going to get out of there," Simoes told ABC News. "Once I got to the window and looked down and I knew what I had to do."
The 23-year-old mother wrapped her toddler in her arms and jumped off the third-floor balcony.
Camron emerged from the fall with only minor injuries. However, Simoes suffered a broken back, and doctors don't know if she'll ever walk again.
Simoes sees her stunning heroic act as just part of the job.
"I don't think that I'm any special hero at all. I'm just Camron's mom," she told CBS Boston.
