High Court Justice Ginsburg Hospitalized
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Ginsburg was hospitalized Thursday night after having felt ill earlier in the day.
According to a statement by the court, Ginburg felt faint, light-headed, and fatigued around 4:50 p.m. – roughly an hour after the Office of the Attending Physician administered an iron sucrose infusion to treat an iron deficiency anemia.
The 76-year-old justice, who was found this past July to have a low red blood cell count due to a deficiency of iron, was found to be in stable health following a medical examination at the court and improved after fluids were administered to her.
Slightly low blood pressure, as was found in Ginsburg, can occur following the treatment she had received, the court reported.
Despite having improved, the justice of 16 years was taken to the Washington Hospital Center around 7:45 p.m. as a precaution for evaluation.
Ginsburg had earlier this year expressed her desire to remain on the Supreme Court for several more years, telling law students at Ohio State University that she wanted to match the tenure of Depression era Justice Louis Brandeis, who served for nearly 23 years and retired at age 82.
Ginsburg, who was appointed by President Clinton, has been on the Supreme Court since 1993. She was the second woman in U.S. history to be appointed the court.
