Hollis Daniels, Texas Tech Student Who Shot Officer in Head, Attended Prominent Christian School
Hollis Daniels, a 19-year-old Texas Tech University freshman who allegedly fatally shot a campus police officer in the head in Lubbock Monday night after he was apprehended in a drug related case previously attended the New Braunfels Christian Academy which strongly promotes Christian values to students.
"With an enduring commitment to the Christian family, the Christian Academy serves the local community by teaching and guiding children to worship God and respect the authority of His Word. We emphasize parental authority and expect students to respect others as we endeavor to build Christian character," the school explains.
On Monday night, however, according a statement from Texas Tech's Chris Cook, Daniels did not live out those Christian teachings.

Cook said Texas Tech police made a student welfare check late Monday afternoon at Daniels' room and found evidence of drugs and drug paraphernalia. He was then brought to the campus police station for a standard briefing when mayhem erupted. "During this time, the suspect pulled a gun and mortally shot an officer," Texas Tech Police Department Chief Kyle Bonath said. "The suspect fled on foot and [was] later apprehended by TTPD near the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum." In a letter to the school community, Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec asked for prayers for the slain police officer.

"Please join me in extending our prayers and heartfelt condolences to the family of one of our Texas Tech police officers who was mortally wounded Monday evening. We will provide more information once all members of the family are notified. I know that the Texas Tech community will respond with support for the family and one another," Schovanec said.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott also shared his condolences.
"First and foremost, our hearts go out to the family of the police officer killed at Texas Tech University. I have spoken to Chancellor Robert Duncan to offer my condolences, and I have mobilized the Texas Department of Public Safety to offer any assistance to the Lubbock Police Department. As the Texas Tech campus deals with this heartbreaking tragedy, Cecilia and I pray for the continued safety of the students and the entire community," he said in a statement shared by the school.
The identity of the slain officer is expected to be released at a press conference scheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday.
Daniels is related to a prominent family of theater owners in Seguin, Texas. He is the son of former Seguin City Councilman H. A. 'Danny' Daniels and Janis Turk Daniels, according to newspaper records. He was named Hollis Alvin James Reid Daniels.
On social media, he goes by the moniker James Reid Daniels and a few months ago he appeared to be having an existential crisis.
"Why God, why God do I gotta suffer?" he asked in an Instagram post on June 16.
In a previous post a few weeks earlier, however, he was praising his mother for how she raised him.
"I appreciate how you raised me, and all the extra love that you gave me," he said.
