Home Depot Signs Deal in Moving Data to Google Cloud Platform
It's a winning moment for American multinational technology company Google as they have just nabbed one big corporate client to sign a deal under their cloud computing platform. According to a report by Reuters, home improvement retailer Home Depot is moving some of its data to Google's cloud.
The deal more or less gave prominence to the momentum that Google Cloud Platform gained under the direction of VMWare co-founder, Diane Greene, who jumped into the bandwagon of Google late last year. Eweek detailed that as Senior Vice President of Google Cloud Platform, Greene works to put the search engine website to the top in terms of cloud product and services. The company's rivals include Amazon, Microsoft and IBM, which are deemed as the largest cloud services providers in the world.
Getting the Atlanta-based construction and home improvement retailer as a client is the first step to the climb to the top. With over 2,000 stores in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, it's no surprise that Google Cloud's ranking in the industry will increase. In fact, overall, Google is the number four player in cloud infrastructure services. This is according to Synergy Research.

Reports also indicated that Apple, which has been a long-time client of Amazon's AWS and Microsoft's Azure, has started utilizing Google's cloud for its iCloud already. It's also mentioned that Spotify, the digital music service that gives access to millions of songs, will soon use Google's cloud for some computing infrastructure. Spotify is a customer of Amazon's AWS.
As for the kind of data that Home Depot is entrusting to Google, 90.1 FM Wabe reported that the company has not specified what it is. They also have not made any comment on whether it has connection with the recent data breach that affected many of the Home Depot customers.
"IT security is of the utmost importance, regardless of any of the technology platforms you're using. I mean, that is across the enterprise, and that will continue to be on the forefront," said Home Depot spokesman Stephen Holmes.
Google Cloud Platform is a cloud computing platform that provides hosting on the same supporting infrastructure that Google makes use internally for end-user products. It allows clients to build and host applications and websites, store data and analyze data.
