'Homeland' Season 7 News: 'The Magicians' Star and 'Boardwalk Empire' Actor Join Showtime Drama
"Homeland" has added two more actors for its upcoming season 7.
Morgan Spector and Mackenzie Astin are officially on board the Showtime drama's next installment, TVLine reports. Spector will take on a series regular role this coming season as Carrie Mathison's (Claire Danes) old friend, Dante Allen. After the assassination attempt on President Keane (Elizabeth Marvel) in season 6, he enters the picture to look into the people who were detained. Spector is best known for his roles in "Boardwalk Empire" and "Person of Interest."
Meanwhile, Astin has been tapped to appear as a guest star. He will portray Carrie's brother-in-law, Bill, who drops his job as a university teacher to be a part of President Keane's administration. It is possible that he could help Carrie crawl back into the President's good graces since the assassination attempt had strained their relationship. Astin is a child star in the '80s. His most recent TV projects include "The Magicians" and "Scandal."
News of Spector's and Astin's casting comes after the show promoted Maury Sterling, Linus Roache and Jake Weber to series regulars. The changes were reportedly made as an attempt to fill the void left by fan-favorite Rupert Friend.
In August, fans expressed their anger over the death of Friend's character by paying a scathing ad in The Hollywood Reporter magazine. The open letter noted the grievances viewers had over Peter Quinn's (Friend) fate, criticizing the show's creative team for their decision to kill off the character after everything he went through.
One of the creators of "Homeland," Alex Gansa, responded to the open letter by saying it is "painful" for him to learn that some fans are disappointed over Peter's death. Although he echoes their sentiment, Gansa said Peter "died a hero" in his eyes.
The seventh season of "Homeland" premieres next year on Showtime. An exact release date has yet to be announced by the network.
