Homeless Man Wins Lotto: Buys Tent, Gives Money Away to Homeless Friends (VIDEO)
A homeless man has won the lotto, in an amazing turn of fortune. However, amazingly despite winning the large jackpot, the man has decided to continue living in a tent outdoors and give away much of his winnings.
Dennis Mahurin reportedly won the jackpot prize of $50,000 in the Michigan lottery, and despite having a tough life being homeless, he decided to selflessly help others with the money rather than himself.
According to The Huffington Post, Mahurin plans on using his winnings to buy himself a new tent and helping his friends in the homeless community. And it would be likely not many would blame Mahurin for using his good fortune to better himself and get off the streets, given that he has been homeless since 1978.
Mahurin, who bought his ticket at a local gas station, has said: "With all the other homeless people around here, I've made up my mind. I'm gonna give them each $100."
He has said that he plans on "paying it forward" to help others, and testfied that he has always believed that "God has a plan for me."
Many have applauded the homeless man for splitting his winnings with 500 others, even though he has also had his critics, with some bloggers insisting that if he cannot even help himself in such circumstances then who else has a chance to help him.
Sandra Rankin, an employee at the gas station where Mahurin bought the ticket, has said, "He is a great guy, has an awesome sense of humor. I care deeply for him and he is a very decent gentleman. He comes into my store three to four times a day. It sounds like he spends his cash on the lottery quite a bit... perhaps he's waiting to hit the 'big one'," according to The Huff Post.
