Horizon Christian Fellowship Prepares to Serve 3,000 Homeless for 28th Annual Thanksgiving Outreach
A San Diego-based ministry will be serving free meals to around 3,000 homeless people during its 28th annual Thanksgiving Outreach on Thursday.
Close to 1,000 volunteers from Horizon Christian Fellowship and the community will contribute an estimated 4,000 hours to support this event taking place on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to the meals, the event will serve San Diegos needy with personal services such as haircuts, showers, makeovers, facials and more.
"Having been a homeless person, I know the heartache of lonely people, said Horizon Senior Pastor Mike Macintosh in a released statement. We find it a joy to express the love of God to the community during Thanksgiving"
Horizon began serving meals to San Diego's homeless in 1977 and has served more than 60,000. According to San Diego's Regional Task Force the region has more than 7,000 homeless men, women and children.
"The first few years we hired a caterer, then after our move to Hale Junior High School we had a Cafe with a fabulous kitchen and we were able to expand," said Macintosh.
Beyond the traditional Turkey dinner, guests receive "extreme" services to brighten their day and their future, including: haircuts and hot showers; pedicures, facials and makeovers; resume writing, job assistance, internet, family searches; medical and dental services; legal services; substance abuse, personal and spiritual counseling; distribution of clothing and personal items; and multicultural services.
Special activities will also be available for kids such as face painting, train rides and clowns. Pets will be included at the Pet Corral. And free roundtrip transportation will be provided at nine San Diego locations.
Horizon is currently seeking for more volunteers for the outreach. A special video that highlights the ministrys Thanksgiving outreach is available for viewing on its website - horizonsd.org.
