'House of Cards' Actor Michael Kelly Talks New Show 'The Long Road Home' Military Drama

National Geographic Channel's latest TV show is a star-studded military drama. "House of Cards" actor Michael Kelly leads the cast of "The Long Road Home" that's based on Martha Raddatz's best-selling book.

Kelly revealed he did not want to do "The Long Road Home" when he first got the script. He just finished filming "House of Cards" season 5 and wanted a break with his family.

What convinced him for "The Long Road Home," however, was after reading up and watching interview clips of his character, Gary Volesky. He headed the rescue of the ambushed U.S. troops in Baghdad on Black Sunday, during the Siege of Sadr City in 2004.

"I watched some interviews that he did with Martha Raddatz," Kelly revealed. "She said, 'You're basically a hero.' He was like, 'The real hero is my wife who stays home and does this without me for a year and a half,'" Kelly shared. He found Volensky's service and loyalty to the country commendable.

Playing Kelly's wife on "The Long Road Home" is Sarah Wayne Callies, the star of "The Walking Dead" and "Prison Break." Kate Bosworth ("Superman Returns") also plays one of the military wives.
