'House of Cards' Season 4 Release Date, Plot Rumors: Beau Willimon Reveals The Most Difficult Scene To Write

Beau Willimon, the man behind the engrossing political drama series "House of Cards," recently shared one of the most challenging scenes to write in the show.

The executive producer, who sat down with The Hollywood Reporter (via Enstarz.com) for its upcoming special Emmy issue, revealed that the most difficult arc to write wasn't actually Kevin Spacey's master manipulator, Frank Underwood. It was Frank's right hand man, Doug (Michael Kelly), and his bout with his "humanity."

"When Doug turns the van around to take care of Rachel. For most of the season he was going to let her go, but I realized the only way for him to come back into the fold of Team Underwood was to do this act [and kill her]. Michael [Kelly] said, 'Oh man, people are going to hate me.' I said, 'Maybe.' And he said, 'But we have to do it.' We filmed with the knowledge that if we changed our minds, we could maybe take that scene out. But once we saw it, we knew it was the right choice," Willimon explained to THR (via Enstars).

The shocking plot twist did warrant a lot of negative reactions. One of those people who raised the issue was TV Line's Michael Ausiello.

During an interview with the publication on March, Willimon admitted to Ausiello that the show has "invested so much into finally seeing Doug's humanity" which, like real people, is full of contradictions.

"…here's a man who has gained access to his own humanity in ways that he hasn't before or for a very long time, and yet his deeper need is to get back by Frank's side," he told TV Line.

Should he choose to refuse the job, for him it would come out as a "sign of giving up" and that he has "completely eschewed loyalty from his playbook."

"Because to have not completed the job is the equivalent of choosing Rachel over Frank, and it would've been against his true nature and his character to dispense of that loyalty entirely," the EP went on to explain (via TV Line).

"House of Cards" Season 4 returns to Netflix in 2016. Stay tuned for more updates.
