Speculations are running rampant over suggestions of Underwood's split from his First Lady after Claire shies away from Frank during an official presidential photoshoot, and if Petrov is to blame for the schism in the marriage. Whether it's Frank swinging both ways or Claire seeking physical comfort in another's arms are just some of the possibilities the trailer has suggested.

Season 3 may train its focus on Claire's character after a leak by The Hollywood Reporter discloses a line she blurts out in Season 3.

"I'm almost 50 years old," Claire said. "I've been in the passenger seat for decades."

That may insinuate the First Lady is ready to carry on with her trademark ruthless ambition sans her husband, perhaps setting her sights on public office, or even a United Nations seat.

Other plot revelations put Russia in the forefront as a geopolitical bogeyman taking the place of China, with the Russian leader's state visit setting the stage for a war of wills between both presidents, and giving viewers a hint that P---- Riot may show up as a special guest in what may be dubbed the "cold war" episode in Season 3.

Season 3 storyline revelations also include a state-of-emergency level East Coast hurricane, and the absence of Doug Stamper, Frank's confidant and chief of staff who was bashed with a brick at the back of the head at the end of Season 2, thanks to his erstwhile love interest and streetwalker friend, Rachel.
