'Houseki no Kuni' Air Date, Spoilers: Gem People to Battle Moon Dwellers for Survival in Upcoming Action-Fantasy Anime Series

In a distant future populated by crystalline life forms known as the Lustrous, Phosphophyllite or Phos has to struggle twice as hard as everyone else to prove his worth in the age-old battle against the Lunarians. However, his true adventures begin when he gets assigned the most harmless of assignments in the upcoming Japanese anime series, "Houseki no Kuni."

The Lustrous is considered to be immortal and genderless. Each of them is assigned a role to take in the fight against the Lunarians, or moon dwellers, who regularly makes an attempt to abduct them and turn them into decorations.

At 300 years old, Phos is the youngest and the most brittle of the gems and is thus not sent into battle for his own safety. However, their master, Kongou, will soon find the perfect assignment for him; that is, creating a natural history encyclopedia.

Determined to give his all to this new assignment, Phos will ask the help of his wise, yet aloof colleague, Cinnabar or Cinsha. This will then give them the opportunity to bond as friends and face the challenges on the path to personal growth.

Will they eventually be able to join the fight to protect their home and their way of life?

The series is based on the Japanese action-fantasy manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Haruko Ichikawa. It was first published in 2012 in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon magazine, and it has since released six compilation volumes.

On the other hand, the anime series will be directed by Takahiko Kyougoku for the Orange CG animation studio. Toshiya Ono is in charge of story composition, while Asako Nishida takes care of the character designs.

"Houseki no Kuni" premieres on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 9:30 p.m. JST on AT-X and at 10 p.m. JST on Tokyo MX. It will also air on the same day at 11 p.m. JST on BS11 and late night at 2:38 a.m. JST on MBS. Additional information on other broadcast schedules and online resources will be available at a later time.

The first three episodes will reportedly be previewed at TOHO Cinemas in Roppongi Hills in Tokyo, Japan on Sunday, Sept. 24.
