How Can I Build up Others?
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building up others . . . Ephesians 4:29
Do you know what your name means? A man in the Bible had a name with a very special meaning. His name was Barnabas, and his name meant "son of encouragement." Isn't that a great name? The Bible tells us that Barnabas did just what his name says–he built up other people by encouraging them.
We first meet Barnabas in the New Testament, right after Saul (later called Paul) became a Christian. People were afraid of Saul. In Acts 9:26-27 we learn that Barnabas took Saul to other believers, told them Saul was now a Christian and that they didn't need to be afraid of him. Barnabas encouraged Paul when they traveled together. Barnabas encouraged people to listen to God's Word and believe it. Barnabas encouraged people to live for the Lord.
Are you an encourager like Barnabas? You can be! Encourage people by saying things like: "You did a great job!" "Thanks for working so hard!" "I like being on your team!" "God loves you and so do I." "I'm glad I know you!" "You are a great friend!"
The Lord Jesus Christ living in Barnabas helped him to build up others. He can do the same for you!
