How Can I Have "Wise" Lips?
You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. Exodus 20:7
Mandy likes to talk a lot! She talks about what she did yesterday and what she wants to do tomorrow. She talks about people and places. She talks about sports, about homework, her computer, TV programs, church, vacations, things she likes and things she doesn't like.
Do people who talk so much have "wise" lips? Proverbs 10:19 says, " . . . he who holds his tongue is wise." To "hold your tongue" means to be quiet. Why would God say to "hold your tongue"? Because every time you speak it is possible you will say something untrue, unkind or unimportant. Also, when you talk so much, people may stop listening. The Bible says, " . . . let your words be few" (Ecclesiastes 5:2).
Queen Esther wanted to speak to the king. She had a plan to save God's people from being killed (Esther 4-5). She had to think and pray so she would say exactly the right words. She had "wise" lips. How can you have "wise" lips? The Bible says, "Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD . . ." (Psalm 141:3).
Be careful what you say. Use words to help people. Use God's name in a right way. Remember this: Pray more! Listen more! Talk less!
