How Can I Know if God Wants Me to Do Something?
As Christians, we are called to obey God's commandments. But how do we know if He wants us to do something? The simple answer is to consult the Bible. If we're doing something that is contrary to His Word, He is telling us to stop and reform our ways.
What if He wants us to do something else that would involve a big decision and commitment? Again, the answer is in the Bible. As long as what we're going to do is not contrary to His Word and will not get in the way of our service to Him, then we're good to go.
But sometimes we're faced with a major decision that won't necessarily compromise our faith but could alter our way of life. This could involve moving to another job or city or country, or deciding to finally be with the long-time significant other. Whatever that may be, it requires taking a major step – a leap, if you may, that would affect the future.
There are also times when we feel like doing a good deed but are having second thoughts because it's not something as easy as contributing money for a worthy cause. It may take a significant portion of our time that could otherwise be spent with our family which is what God also wants.
In these cases, we have to be sensitive of what the Holy Spirit wants. If the conviction in our heart and spirit doesn't stop and keeps on bugging us, it may actually be a call from God. We have to meditate on our options and seek God through deep prayer and reading the Bible.
The best thing to do is for us to set aside at least one day for fasting. We should turn off the phone and lock ourselves in our room so we can pray and read the Bible. God will listen because that is His law (Matthew 7:7; Luke 11:9). He will calm our doubts and give us clarity of mind if we surrender everything to Him.
