How Can I Tell Bad Counsel from Good Counsel?
Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise . . . Proverbs 22:17
"Come on," Jed yelled. "Follow the leader." As he jumped on his bike, Randy followed and tried to trace Jed's path. Down the sidewalk. Across the street. Down one driveway and up the next.
Both boys stopped at a busy intersection to catch their breath. That was as far as either boy was allowed to ride. But Jed started walking his bike across the highway saying, "Let's keep going!" Randy wanted to follow, but he knew it was a bad idea because God tells us in Ephesians 6:1 to obey our parents.
Like a bad idea from a friend, bad counsel does not feel right. God's Holy Spirit lives inside you to help you know if the counsel someone gives you is right or wrong. The Spirit reminds you of things you have heard from God's Word. Good counsel always agrees with God's Word. The more of God's Word you learn, the easier it will be for you to tell bad counsel from good counsel.
The right thing to do may not always be the most fun. Randy knew that. He may have wanted to follow Jed, but he decided to go home. Will you ask God to help you know and do what is right?
