How Georgetown U students responded to pro-life activists speaking on campus

Boos, barking and expletives

An older pro-choice woman observing the pro-life display from afar called Hawkins a "pig" and made other disparaging remarks about the SFLA president's appearance shortly after the pro-life leader began doing outreach.

She told those gathered that if Hawkins wanted to share her opinion on the issue quietly, that was fine, arguing that the pro-life leader shouldn't be so vocal when asking people for their thoughts on abortion.

Another woman walking by the display, who identified herself as a mother, said Hawkins and the other pro-lifers were engaging in "violent rhetoric." Hawkins answered that she is also a mother and that abortion is what's violent before the woman walked away.

As the day went on, the number of people surrounding the table increased, with many stopping to engage with the pro-lifers or observe others' interactions with the group. A few times during the day, Hawkins held up a fetal model and used a Sopher clamp to educate people about second-trimester abortions.

In a second-trimester abortion, the abortionist dilates the woman's cervix and uses a Sopher clamp and a curette to extract and dismember the unborn baby.

At one point during the day, when more of a crowd gathered around the table, Hawkins started talking again about what a second-trimester abortion entails. The students responded by loudly booing and making barking noises to drown out the explanation.

"I'd boo abortion, too," Hawkins said in response, telling the crowd that if they support abortion, they should be able to stomach her non-graphic demonstration about the procedure.

One male student began loudly playing the saxophone to make it harder for Hawkins and the other pro-lifers to interact with the people on campus. Hawkins questioned campus security about why the young man was allowed to disrupt the event without security scolding him, whereas they kept reprimanding her for standing too far away from her group's table.

Campus security allowed the male student to continue playing his saxophone for a while before asking him to stop.

After campus security told him he couldn't keep disrupting the pro-life group's outreach efforts with his saxophone, the young man screamed at the pro-lifers to "Get the f— off of our campus!" He complained to campus security that he did not want Hawkins on campus, claiming that people like her are trying to kill those like him.

The male student then started chanting, "Get off our campus! Get off our campus!" at Hawkins and the other pro-lifers.
