'How to Train Your Dragon 3' Release Date, Plot Spoilers: Film's Delay May Be a Good Thing, Report Claims

The movie "How to Train Your Dragon 3" has gone through many scheduling changes. And, in December, it was revealed that the film has been delayed to March 2019. While a delay may have set off some red flags in fans' minds, it is not always an indicator of something bad.

It was previously reported that DreamWorks Animation has pushed back the release of "How to Train Your Dragon 3" from May 2018 to March 2019. And while the reason for the change was not revealed, a new report claims that the decision behind it was brought about by a desire to ensure the best quality for the film.

According to the report, the delay was apparently due to the studio wanting to make the best film possible for fans. There were previous rumors that "How to Train Your Dragon 3" would end up getting the axe following news of its release date change. The concern over the film's possible cancellation was also exacerbated partly due to the sequel to "The Croods" being called off. However, as pointed out by the same report, "How to Train Your Dragon" is a popular franchise and the studio undoubtedly wants to make the most of it.

The delay is, ultimately, because of DreamWorks' drive to deliver and not disappoint. Competition is tough, after all, especially with Disney's recent animated features like "Frozen" and "Moana."

The upcoming sequel will be the final installment in the "How to Train Your Dragon" franchise. Described as "the culmination of Hiccup's coming of age" by director Dean DeBlois, the third film will see Jay Baruchel's character as the new chief of his tribe. The logline, published by Deadline, reads:

"As Hiccup fulfills his dream of creating a peaceful dragon utopia, Toothless' discovery of an untamed, elusive mate draws the Night Fury away. When danger mounts at home and Hiccup's reign as village chief is tested, both dragon and rider must make impossible decisions to save their kind."

"How to Train Your Dragon 3" will arrive in U.S. theaters on March 1, 2019.
