Howard University Praises Gods Goodness, Mercy
WASHINGTON A historically African-American university hosted a gospel concert to help kick-off its homecoming week on Sunday.
Some 1,500 people attended Howard Universitys sold-out Have Faith in Me gospel concert with performances ranging from a full gospel choir to hip-hop gospel to body worship. Audience members readily responded to the music by dancing in the aisle, lifting up their hands in praise, and singing in unison with performers.
I think it is good to start it out with God, said Teneasha Pearson, the host of the gospel concert. Well have a Holy Ghost party tonight because we know there is no party like a Holy Ghost party!
Many of the songs on Sunday night contained lyrics focused on personal faith and gratitude for Gods mercy.
In one of the songs sung by Jarmel Evans and Worship Forever, the chorus along with the audience repeatedly sang We believe, I believe with many people raising their hands when Evans asked, How many people already believe in Jesus?
Grammy nominee Deitrick Haddon was greeted with screams of excitement as R&B and Hip-Hop beats boomed from the speakers on stage.
Scream like you lost your mind, like God is your everything, urged Haddon as he stepped out on stage. [Like] He is the air that you breathe!
During one of the songs, the audience was particularly moved by the lyrics, Even when I did wrong, He was still there. Im glad God still hears a sinners prayer. Students raised clasped hands, closed their eyes, and swayed as they echoed the lyrics Im glad God still hears a sinners prayer.
Gospel Diva Kim Burrell, the Howard Gospel Choir, and the Andrew Rankin liturgical dancers also performed.
