HTC Explorer Unveiled in India: 'Most Affordable' Smartphone Hits the Market

The HTC smartphone, Explorer, made its debut in Delhi, India today.

This brand new smartphone, previously codenamed the "Pico", is reportedly going to be one of the most affordable models on the market when it finally releases. Rumors have run amok about today's press event due to the contest HTC ran on its Indian Facebook page. The details state that winners will be able to attend a special press conference and get to talk with the global HTC team.

The HTC's Explorer was recently leaked, which in turn let out the smartphone's specs. The phone runs on the latest Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread) Operating System.

The HTC Explorer will include a 3.2 inch HVGA display with a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels and a 600 MHz processor. It will also come with 3 mega pixel rear camera, VGA front-facing camera, 3.5mm headset jack, multimedia player, 512 MB RAM, 512 MB ROM, microSD card slot, 32 GB expandable memory, Adobe Flash support, Wi-Fi 801.11 b/g/n, 3G Connectivity, Android Market, Bluetooth 3.0 and a 1230 mAh battery.

The phone's Android Market enables users to download more than 250,000 applications from day one of their purchase.

Back cover colors revealed for the phone so far include Metallic Purple, Metallic White, Metallic Blue and Metallic Orange.

Jason Mackenzie, president of global sales and marketing of the HTC Corporation, said “HTC Explorer is an easy-to-use smartphone that puts the customer in control, providing quick access to their most important content and information. HTC Explorer is simply a smarter phone for anyone and it represents another clear demonstration of HTC’s global commitment to expanding the market for advanced smartphones.”

Mackenzie made the official announcement of the smartphone at today's press event in India.

HTC's decision to release the phone first in a non-Western market is a first for the company. This move is seen as being more of a win for the company since India is rapidly emerging as the biggest market for entry-level smartphones.

HTC's latest smartphone will be sold in India next month and have a retail price of Rs.11,650 (approx. $240 USD). Europe and Asia, along with a host of other countries, will get the phone in the coming months afterwards.
