HTC One M8 vs. Sony Xperia Z2: Spec by Spec Comparison
The HTC One M8 and Sony Xperia Z2 debuted this year and represent the next generation of Android.
Both devices feature Earth shattering specifications, and pack enough fire power to neutralize an entire fleet of Galaxy S5s. Well, maybe not that much. Either way, neither Sony nor HTC took it easy when developing the two handsets and both companies put just about everything they could into each of them. So which one is more powerful? Here is a brief comparison of the two.
Speed
The Xperia Z2 and the HTC One M8 feature a Snapdragon 801 chipset. The HTC device comes with 2GB of RAM while the Xperia Z2 steps it up a notch by entering into Galaxy Note 3 territory with 3GB. A processor such as this one with 2GB RAM seems like the standard at this point for the smartphone market. Sony went the extra mile this time around and might have the more powerful device overall. That all depends on how the software integrates with the hardware. Based on sheer numbers, the Xperia Z2 takes this one.
Display
The Xperia Z2 features a 5.2-inch LCD display with 1920 x 1080 pixels at 423 ppi. The screen is shatter-proof and scratch-resistant making it more durable than HTC's. The One M8 comes with a 5-inch LCD display with the same resolution at 441 ppi. The difference in ppi is due to the smaller screen size. These two appear to be even when it comes to the numbers, but Sony might have the advantage thanks to the added durability.
Camera
The Xperia Z2 comes with a 20.7-megapixel rear shooter with High Dynamic Range, panorama, and touch focus. It also has a 2.2 megapixel front camera. The HTC One M8 packs a 4-Ultrapixel dual-shooter on the back with a 5-megapixel camera on the front. The dual-camera effect is pretty unique as HTC decided to take a different route with improving the point and shooter. Sony just enhanced the megapixels to a very high degree. Both companies have taken steps to outdo the competition, but it remains to be seen which one will be better in the long run. Each company gets points for innovation here.
Design
The Sony Xperia Z2 features a shiny glass exterior that takes from the iPhone 5s while the HTC One M8 comes with an all metal exterior that is more polished and refined than what was on the original version. The material on the Z2 has a great shine to it, but I personally prefer the choice of sturdy and strong metal by HTC. I'd have to give it to them on this one.
Conclusion
The Sony Xperia Z2 might have the advantage here when it comes to sheer power and overall specs. The HTC One M8 is a great device, but the company chose to play it safe in certain areas which could have hurt it in this competition. Sony took some more risks and made a device that will probably stay fresh until we are well into 2015.
