Hugh Jackman Tops Box Office With 'Real Steel'

Hugh Jackman was victorious this weekend as “Real Steel” debuted on top of the box office.

Walt Disney flick “Real Steel,” scored the number 1 position for the weekend. Estimates indicated the Jackman film earned $27.3 million in revenue. $3.2 million from its total is from IMAX receipts.

The PG-13 film about a boxing trainer operating a robot to fight was heavily marketed to males in the weeks leading up to its release.

The ad push was successful because, 60 percent of moviegoers going to see “Real Steel” were males, and over 70 percent were under the age of 35.

The high earnings of the film will be essential for Disney since ‘Real Steel” has a budget of just under $110 million.

Coming in distant second for the weekend was the Academy Award favorite “Ides of March.” The film took in an estimated $10.4 million.

“Ides of March,” about the inside dealings of a political campaign stars George Clooney as a ruthless politician looking to win an election.

The film has already stirred Oscar talks with Clooney being considered for best director or best actor since he starred and directed the flick.

The makeup of “Ides of March,“ was the complete opposite of “Real Steel.” Female goers made up around 60 percent of its viewers, with only 40 percent of people accounting for ages older than 35.

Elsewhere in the top five, family movie “Dolphin Tale,” drops from the top position to number 3 after earning an estimated $9.1 million. That’s around a 34 percent drop bringing its total to nearly $50 million.

Brad Pitt film “Moneyball,” nabbed the number 4 spot earning $7.5 million declining 38 percent. Rounding out the top 5 was the cancer comedy “50/50,” earning an estimated $5.5 million in revenue only dropping 34 percent for the weekend.
