Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez has died, his vice president officially confirmed on Tuesday evening.

Chavez had been keeping a low profile after he returned from cancer treatment in Cuba last month, and has not been seen publicly recently.

Vice President Nicolas Maduro, who was clearly emotional, made the announcement on Tuesday evening, as he stood with other leading Venezuelan political and military leaders.

Earlier, he said the 58-year-old Venezuelan leader had a new, severe respiratory infection and had entered "his most difficult hours."
