Around 300 people gathered Friday morning at the World Prayer Center to commemorate one of the nation’s largest natural disasters in U.S. history.

On the morning of Sept. 16, around 300 people gathered at the World Prayer Center to commemorate one of the nation’s largest natural disasters in U.S. history.

The World Prayer Center, a ministry of New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colo., held a prayer session this morning at 7 a.m. in honor of “National Day of Prayer and Remembrance.” Local Christian organizations, such as Focus on the Family and Christian radio station KBIQ 102.7, volunteered to help promote the event.

On Sept. 8, President Bush announced a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for Hurricane Katrina victims to be held on Sept. 16. The event called upon Americans to pray for Katrina victims who are struggling to reconstruct their lives, for the safety of rescue workers and volunteers in the devastated areas, and for the rebuilding process of the Gulf coast among other prayer topics.

“We will strive together in this effort, and we will prevail through perseverance and prayer," remarked President Bush when he called for the National day of Prayer and Remembrance.

In addition, President Bush said earlier this morning that, “across the Gulf Coast, among people who have lost much, and suffered much, and given to the limit of their power, we are seeing that same spirit: A core of strength that survives all hurt, a faith in God no storm can take away, and a powerful American determination to clear the ruins and build better than before.”

New Life Church World Prayer center has been praying daily for hurricane victims since the beginning of the devastation. Daniel Grothe, Assistant Director of World Prayer Center at New Life church explains why prayer is important at the World Prayer Center and during this time of rebuilding the lives and homes of evacuees.

“Someone once asked me last week, why pray?” said Grothe. “And I told them prayer changes things, we believe in doing what we can to help but in our humanity there is only so much we can do and we need God to help that is why we pray, we ask God to bring his power to help people out when we can’t do it ourselves

New Life Church constructed the World Prayer Center in 1998 and the facility is open for prayer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The World Prayer Center contains a main chapel seating 400 people, prayer rooms, prayer closets, extended prayer rooms, and a courtyard.
