Millions of people along the East Coast are being encouraged to check off their hurricane supply lists in preparation for what has been deemed a potentially lethal storm.

Prolonged power outages are anticipated as Hurricane Sandy nears the East Coast. High wind warnings are in effect in several areas. Residents who live in areas with large trees have been advised to remain in lower areas of the house or the basement if possible.

Residents have been reminded to have plenty of water on hand, both for drinking and for sanitation purposes. If the electricity goes out, running water will not be available. The recommended amount of stored water is one gallon per person in addition to whatever may be need to mix formula for babies and pets. A separate storage of sanitation water should then be collected.

According to the most recent update of the storm by the U.S. National Hurricane Center, the category 1 hurricane has continued to worsen. So far, nine U.S. states have declared a state of emergency.

President Barack Obama also released a statement regarding the storm, after being forced to cancel campaign efforts in order to return to Washington.

"This is a serious and big storm," Obama said on Sunday according to Reuters, after a briefing at the federal government's storm response center in Washington. "We don't yet know where it's going to hit, where we're going to see the biggest impacts."

It is anticipated that the storm will strike Atlantic City, New Jersey by Monday night. Meanwhile, businesses in downtown Manhattan were closed on Monday, including the New York Stock Exchange. Businesses may also remain closed on Tuesday, depending on the forecast.
