I Am Second and MC Propaganda Create Spoken Word Challenge
A Spoken Word Challenge is being held by I Am Second and rapper-poet Propaganda from now until June 18.
The challenge will allow individuals to define who they are through art by submitting videos online. The challenge is hoping to create a positive platform for children regardless of age, race, and gender to discover their identity beyond what society feels.
"I recently had the honor and privilege to sit down with wonderful people to share my story," Propaganda said in a video about the Spoken Word Challenge in the press release. "If you know anything about me, my catalog and my music, I talk a lot about issues of identity. In this one, I'm going to talk about my journey and identity. Can't wait to share it with you, but before that happens, I have a little challenge for you."
Propaganda is hoping to use hip-hop, a cultural shaker, to devalue the images of sex and violence and bring the music back to its roots of self-expression and positive messages. He also wants to address what is happening in culture today.
The rapper, whose real name is Jason Petty, is known inside hip-hop circles as a "master of spoken word," and is effective at creating powerful illustrations through his faith in God.
He is currently on tour with Lecrae and his video for "G.O.S.P.E.L." has gone viral.
"One of my most frequently asked requests is, 'Can I submit my poetry to you, my spoken word? Will you check it out and give me a few pointers?'" Propaganda said. "Here's your chance. I want you to burn that paper up and scribble your most amazing poetry pieces you can about your journey."
To submit to the Spoken Word Challenge, individuals must create a 90-second video that includes "iamsecond.com/propaganda" somewhere in the clip. It has to be submitted by June 18 to spokenwordchallenge@gmail.com.
The qualifying videos will be place on the official Spoken Word Challenge YouTube page, and the winning video will be chosen by Propaganda out of the top five most viewed videos.
$200 will be awarded to the winner, which will be announced on June 21 along with music and apparel prizes.
