'I Never Chase Boys,' Says Taylor Swift: How Breakups Became Top Hits (VIDEO)

Having won about as many Grammy awards as she has ex-boyfriends, Taylor Swift is setting the record straight when it come to her music and her inspiration.

Taylor Swift appears to have a special power when turning her pain into a top-selling hit. For the country singer, however, songwriting is not all about the ex.

"To me it's just writing songs the way I always have. It's me sitting on my bed feeling pain I didn't understand, writing a song, and understanding it better," Swift told Elle magazine during a recent interview.

Fortunately for her, Swift's therapy sessions seem to resonate with thousands of women. Critics point to the songstress' various failed relationships, but that doesn't mean that people should read in to her lyrics too closely, she says.

"If people want to dissect the lyrics, that's their right, but it's all coming from the exact same place as where I started," she said. "It's just something I do to feel better."

Then again, that "indie record that is much better" than hers probably didn't win as many awards as Swift did while working out painful feelings. But just because she writes about boys does not mean that she chases after them.

"I'm sure if I looked up the latest Google Alerts rumor it would say I'm chasing somebody who doesn't like me as much as I like him – people love that angle on me," she explained in the interview. "They're like 'Oh Taylor, coming on too strong again, chasing boys. I never chase boys. They don't like it!'"
