Ian Somerhalder News: Fans Give Reasons Why Actor Must Not Leave 'The Vampire Diaries'
Almost a year after it was announced that Nina Dobrev was leaving "The Vampire Diaries," avid fans of the show that have followed it for the last seven years can't help worrying that another actor playing a major character in the series will follow suit, Ian Somerhalder, aka Damon Salvatore. This left the hardcore fans of the actor posting on social media appealing for Somerhalder to stay on the show, even if the rumor of him leaving is yet to be confirmed.
One of the first reasons cited by the fans show why Somerhalder should stay is that, should he close the "Vampire Diaries" chapter of his life, the show will be left with only one major character from its originally three. When the show started, the story revolved around the characters of Somerhalder's Damon, Paul Wesley's Stefan Salvatorre, and Dobrev's Elena Gilbert engaged in a love triangle, vampire style. While it's true that some of the supporting cast from the start of the show are still there, such as Kat Graham's Bonnie and Candice Accola's Caroline, they are but, well, supporting roles.

While Somerhalder's departure from the show that made him the star that he is today remains uncertain, fans, likewise, protest that the show will never be the same how it is if he does leave. For one thing, fans point out that, wherever Damon goes, Stefan goes to protect or support his brother. If the story will feature him leaving Mystic Falls in order to explain Somerhalder's disappearance from the show, that wouldn't be rational as the Salvatorre brothers are known to be a package deal. Of course, the idea of killing off Damon will certainly not sit well with the fans and may take a toll on its viewership.
As Damon provides the comic relief to the show, Somerhalder's departure from show, if true, will also deprive the viewers of his witty and comic one-liners that only he can do successfully, some viewers believe. In fact, this is one of the reasons why fans love Damon, despite being hated initially because of his evil and dark character during the early parts of the show.
Fans have stressed many other reasons as to why they don't want Somerhalder to leave "The Vampire Diaries." However, at this point in time, everything about Somerhalder leaving the show is just a speculation. If it's of any consolation to the fans, CW has already renewed "The Vampire Diaries" for its season eight run.
