Imagine Dragons' 'Believer' Music Video Shows Man's Unwavering Spirit
"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger." This seems to be the dogma of Imagine Dragons' newest single, "Believer," and its video further makes that message clearer and stronger for everyone to understand and internalize.
In the music video, the band's vocalist, Dan Reynolds, is personifying every man's version of a believer, someone who doesn't give up despite the many hardships that life throws at him and continues to push forward. To further bring the point across, he spars with no less than the iron man Drago from "Rocky IV," Dolph Lundgren.
From how the video is constructed, they are making Lundgren appear as the embodiment of pain as he throws punches at Reynolds. In the middle of the song, Reynolds pants and tells Ludgren, "I want to stop," to which Lundgren replies, "We can't." This is somehow a reference to the chorus' lyrics, "Pain! You break me down, you build me up, believer, believer," further emphasizing that one does not stop when things get rough.

The song, coupled with an equally strong video, is a new theme of empowerment and perseverance. This is something that Reynolds has also confirmed in a statement, in which he said, "'Believer' is about finding a place of peace and self-confidence. The video depicts a man facing his inner self, the toughest critic of all, while paying homage to some of the classic movies we grew up with."
This, however, is not the first time the song was used in a video. It can be recalled that "Believer" was also used as the soundtrack of the Nintendo Switch's Super Bowl 51 commercial. At first one would think that the song was used to make it look cool to get the console/handheld hybrid, but now one realizes that Nintendo had its ups and downs, and the Switch is its shot at returning to the top.
