Majority of Americans Against Trump's Immigration Policies

A recent CNN and ORC International poll reveals that majority of Americans disagree with President Donald Trump's immigration policies, with around 60 percent saying that the government should not deport illegal immigrants outright but develop a plan to allow them to become legal U.S. residents.

Since the presidential campaign, Trump has always been vocal about his plan to strictly enforce U.S. immigration laws. When he assumed the presidency, he immediately signed executive orders that paved the way for the deportation and detention of illegal immigrants, as well as the construction of a Southern border wall.

While Trump's immigration policies are aimed towards the elimination of possible criminal threats in America, the poll released on March 17 reveals that more Americans actually find these policies rather unfavorable. The poll finds that six out of every 10 Americans are concerned that the government will be overzealous in its deportation efforts that it may overlook the dangerous criminals in the country.

Based on the survey, around two-thirds of America's population are now more concerned about the effects of deportation going too far than about immigrant crimes. In fact, 58 percent of the population are not in favor of deporting immigrants who have not committed any serious crime in America. On the other hand, only 40 percent believe that letting illegal immigrants stay will only result in criminals remaining in the United States.

The poll reveals that only 13 percent of Americans believe that deporting illegal immigrants should be the top priority of the administration. Only 27 percent support the deportation of non-criminal illegal immigrants and only 26 percent believe that the government should develop a plan to prevent immigrants from illegally entering the United States.

For the poll, CNN/ORC interviewed 1,025 Americans by phone from March 1 to 4. The survey is said to have a margin error of plus or minus three percentage points.
