'Immortals' Sweep Weekend Box Office
The action and adventure film “Immortals” has stolen the top earning spot in the box office over Veterans Day weekend.
Released Friday, the story follows a brutal and bloodthirsty king in Greece battling one man who accepts his role in saving humanity. The film by Relativity Media received $32 million domestically, partly because of heightened fees for viewing it in 3D.
The R-rated movie achieved $7 million more than what Relativity Media estimated it would earn – making it the studio’s highest-opening movie as a distributor. The weekend earnings has made “Immortals” the third highest R-rated film debut of the year. “Immortals” trails behind “Hangover 2” which earned $85 million and “Paranormal 3” which debuted with $52 million.
Meanwhile, Adam Sandler’s Friday-released movie “Jack and Jill” opened at number two during the weekend with $26 million. David Spade appears in the holiday comedy about a family that hosts their passive-aggressive and needy relative during her Thanksgiving visit.
The new movies bumped previously released “Puss in Boots” to the number three spot after spending two weeks at the top. The domestic total for the film is now $108.8 million.
“Tower Heist” came in at number four for Veterans Day weekend with $13.2 million domestically. Clint Eastwood’s bio-drama on the first director of the FBI, “J. Edgar,” was released Friday but underwhelmed the studio earning $11.5 million during its opening weekend.
Rounding out the remaining 10 top movies in the U.S. and Canada over the weekend was “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas” at number six, “In Time” starring Justin Timberlake at number seven, and “Paranormal Activity” coming in at number eight during its third week in theaters.
Finally, “Footloose” claimed the weekend’s ninth highest earning film in the box office, earning $2.7 million, while number 10, “Real Steel,” earned $2 million.
This week will see the premiere of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” which is estimated to bring huge crowds to the box office. The movie will be in theaters everywhere Friday Nov. 18.
