'Indiana Jones 5' is Happening, Lucasfilm Confirms

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy recently confirmed what has long been speculation -- the iconic "Indiana Jones" is coming back for the fifth time. Her recent pronouncement confirms that Lucasfilm and Disney have some plans to revive the franchise, but has no indication when it will happen.

While Lucasfilm and Disney are doing a lot of work in reviving the "Star Wars" franchise, they also shared via an article on Vanity Fair what their plans are for the other franchises.

"In buying the company, Disney also got rights, for better or for worse, to less-storied Lucasfilm properties, among them Willow and Radioland Murders. A bigger prize is the Indiana Jones franchise. Kennedy confirmed rumors that another Indy movie 'will one day be made inside this company. When it will happen, I'm not quite sure. We haven't started working on a script yet, but we are talking about it.'"

Amidst years of speculation about an "Indiana Jones 5," an earlier confirmation of sorts came with "Indiana Jones" cinematographer's revelation that his "next project is the upcoming fifth 'Indiana Jones' movie" while talking about his career. This revelation again fueled rumors about the film.

The last "Indiana Jones" film was the 2008 "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," which was a disappointment in the box office as well as among Indy fans.

According to a report in Cinema Blend, this recent confirmation once again revived speculation about how they will revive the franchise, particularly with regards to who will play the iconic character of Dr. Indiana Jones. Harrison Ford has long been associated with the role and some say that it would be difficult to replace him. However, if Disney wants to revive the franchise so that it continues for the younger generation, they have to consider casting someone younger.

Slash Film on the other hand raises the question whether the upcoming film will be a sequel, a prequel or a reboot. Although Ford indicated his interest to reprise his role, it says that the studio "will want a younger star to revive the franchise for a new generation."
