'Indiana Jones 5' News, Update: Harrison Ford's Big Screen Return as Indy Gets a Release Date
"Indiana Jones 5" is still happening with Disney announcing a July 19, 2019 release date for the return of everyone's favorite archaeologist to the big screen.
The film will see the reunion of Harrison Ford as Indy and Steven Spielberg, who directed the four installments in the beloved franchise.
The 2019 release date for "Indiana Jones 5" means that it will be 11 years after the most recent movie, which is "Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull."
In announcing the release date for "Indiana Jones 5," Disney chairman Alan Horn described the iconic titular character in a statement as "one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history."
"We can't wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019. It's rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn't be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven," he said.
Fans will not have to worry about Indy's life in "Indiana Jones 5" as Spielberg already said that the character will not share the same fate with Ford's cult-favorite "Star Wars" role, Han Solo.
The director assured to The Hollywood Reporter last year that Indiana Jones will not be killed off in the upcoming film. "The one thing I will tell you is I'm not killing off Harrison at the end of it," he said.
In fact, Disney CEO Bob Iger hinted in the past that "Indiana Jones 5" might actually restart the franchise. The company is looking to do a "continuum" first by bringing Ford back and then doing a "reboot" of it.
Spielberg also plans to work with "Indiana Jones" creator himself, George Lucas, in the highly anticipated film by having him executive produce it.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and her husband Frank Marshall, who both serve as co-founders of Amblin Entertainment with Spielberg, will be producers for "Indiana Jones 5."
