'Injustice 2' Release Date, News: How Does Character Customization Work?

The DC Extended Universe has captured gamer's imagination with "Injustice: Gods Among Us," pitting both heroes and villains in an epic skirmish in which the line between good and evil is completely blurred. Given its popularity, it was only a matter of time until its sequel, "Injustice 2," comes to fruition, and it appears it is bringing something that will change the way players fight.

In the game's announcement trailer, mainstays such as Batman and Superman are seen duking it out. What's worth noticing, however, was how each character would then don some kind of mechanical suit, augmenting their abilities and making them more powerful, thus customization is born. How does this work exactly?

In a PlayStation blog post, Sony Interactive Entertainment America's social media director Sid Shuman shared what he discovered during the recently held Game Developers' Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, California. He mentioned "Injustice 2" has one of the most in-depth customization schemes for fighting games.

Customization involves the use of gears, which can be obtained either through battle both online and offline, or by purchasing what is called "Mother Boxes" using in-game gold. The gears are used to customize the appearance of a character's head, chest, arms, and legs plus an additional accessory, all of which can affect stats related to strength, ability, health and defense.

This new mode allows players to mix-and-match, however, some higher-tier items provide special effects. "Full gear sets, such as Batman's kryptonite-infused outfit, are likely to be especially prized because they can grant dramatic bonuses when fully assembled," Shuman mentioned as an example.

Gamers can even customize their characters further by playing with the shades. What it does is it allows gamers to create differently-colored heroes despite having identical gears with others.

What this means to competitive play is that not one character is the same for every player, as the way they are customized would make noticeable advantages and visual differences. For those who only wish to see the aesthetic effect of the gears and stick to the base stats, the tournament mode allows exactly that.

"Injustice 2" arrives on PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Xbox One platforms on May 16, 2017.
