Introducing the New Basic Nutrient Support
These exciting additions to the dozens of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, herbs, plant extracts and essential fatty acids always found in Basic Nutrient Support make it an even more complete, effective and cost-effective nutritional supplement.
Resveratrol
Reports in the news and the nutrition industry have been touting the health benefits of resveratrol, a compound found in red wine, for quite some time now. While the majority of early studies showing the health benefits of resveratrol had been conducted on animals and in test tubes, recent clinical studies, using the same resVida® brand trans-resveratrol that is now in Basic Nutrient Support, were conducted with human participants.
At the 4th International Conference on Polyphenols and Health in Australia last year, results were presented showing strong evidence that trans-resveratrol supplements appear to have protective effects on the elasticity and resilience of blood vessels, making resveratrol more beneficial for a healthy heart and circulation than previously understood.
Earlier, a widely seen report on CBS' 60 Minutes explored the effects of resveratrol on longevity and showed promise that it may slow aging at a cellular level.
Vinpocetine
Vinpocetine comes from the periwinkle plant (Vinca minor) that many of us know as a flowering border plant. In Europe and Japan, where they recognize that it increases blood circulation in the brain, Vinpocetine has been used medicinally for helping age-related memory issues. Vinpocetine is also being studied for its potential to help with Alzheimer's because studies have shown it helps carry blood and oxygen to the brain. Already part of the Memory & Mental Support and Menopause Support formulas, you can now find Vinpocetine in Basic Nutrient Support to help support normal brain function.
Increased Vitamin D
Like resveratrol, vitamin D is another supplement that has appeared in the news quite a bit lately. Previous minimum requirements were based only avoiding the deficiency conditions such as rickets, and didn't take into account that vitamin D is essential to many body functions.
More and more studies show that vitamin D has a critical connection with healthy bones, muscle maintenance, blood sugar, heart health, immunity and a positive frame of mind. See Vitamin D – For More Than Just Bones.
In the right environment, your body makes its own vitamin D through exposure to sunlight, which is how it got the nickname, "the sunshine vitamin." But more and more, people are not getting the right amount of sun, either due to living in the far north, not spending time outdoors, or the increased use of sunscreens.
We now understand that we could and should be taking a lot more vitamin D on a daily basis to stay healthy. Based on research in the last five years, many experts now recommend a daily vitamin D intake of 1000 IU or more, especially as we age.
When taking vitamin D, make sure that it's in the form of cholecalciferol, or D3 – the kind included in Basic Nutrient Support – as opposed to D2, or ergocalciferol. Also, to get the vitamin D in your Basic Nutrient Support supplement absorbedand circulating up to 50 percent more efficiently, take it with a meal, rather than on an empty stomach.
Note: To see if you have a vitamin D deficiency, ask your doctor for a 25-hydroxyvitamin D test, which is the most accurate measure of the amount of vitamin D in the body. This is done by drawing a small amount of blood.
