iOS 6.1 Release Date Has Arrived, Software Now Rolling Out

The iOS 6.1 release date has finally arrived as Apple has begun rolling out the software to owners of the company's devices.

The software update brings a few new features to the operating system including LTE support for more carriers, the ability to purchase movie tickets through Fandango by using Siri, and a new button to reset the Advertising Identifier.

"iOS 6 is the world's most advanced mobile operating system, and with nearly 300 million iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices on iOS 6 in just five months, it may be the most popular new version of an OS in history," said Philip Schiller, Apples senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. "iOS 6.1 brings LTE support to more markets around the world, so even more users can enjoy ultrafast Safari browsing, FaceTime video calls, iCloud services, and iTunes and App Store downloads."

The newly supported LTE carriers in the U.S. include Alaska Communications, Alaska GCI, Bluegrass Cellular, C Spire, Cellcom, and Pioneer Cellular. These new LTE carriers are only supported by the 4th generation iPad, iPad Mini, and the iPhone 5. This makes sense as those Apple devices are the only ones that support LTE connectivity.

The rollout out of iOS 6.1 came relatively quickly after the Apple just made the fifth beta version of the software available to developers last week. This beta must be really close to the finished product since the two were launched with such little time in between.

Apple released iOS 6 in the fall of this year. The software brought some upgrades to Siri along with Apple's very own Maps application to replace Google's. YouTube was eliminated from the home page and the notifications systems were also improved.
