iPad 3 Release Date in 2012, Not 2011, Says Analyst

Rumors that the new iPad 3 tablet would release this fall have been quelled by quotes taken from a report by a J.P. Morgan analyst.

News of an updated version of the the iPad 2 and its successor, the iPad 3, hitting the market this fall circulated even before the iPad 2 officially released. Some feel that this move is wholly unnecessary, as the iPad 2 has only been around since March of this year. Early reactions from customers and bloggers suggested that they were not pleased at purchasing an updated iPad within the same year as the last one.

Mark Moskowitz, J.P. Morgan analyst for All Things Digital, says that the chances of Apple releasing the iPad 3 this year are slim to none.

In a research report that was given to clients, he states, "In recent months, there has been rising investor speculation that a new iPad 3 would be launched for the holiday season. Our latest research continues to indicate that there is no such device slated for production this year.”

“There are prototypes in the supply chain related to the next-generation device, but our conversations with industry participants suggest that a new device will not be available until sometime in calendar 2012,” Moskowitz adds.

Moskowitz goes on to say, "We do not think Apple needs to be in a rush to unveil a new iPad. …The other tablet entrants have stumbled so far, and that trend-line could persist deep into 2012. Motorola Mobility and Research In Motion have been recent disappointments, and we expect more stumbles from others.”

The iPad currently holds a strong market share of 68.3% in the tablet market. All Things Digital's other contributor John Paczkowski feels that Apple doesn't need to rush the release of another iPad that could anger customers who have previously purchased the iPad 2.

As it stands, the iPad 2 will still be the sole tablet that Apple has in stores for 2011.
