iPad 3 Release Date: New Display Details
The upcoming iPad 3 will have a 264-ppi display and a resolution of 2048x1536, according to Brooke Crothers of CNET.
Crothers said the new information is from a source with close ties to iPad display manufactures.
“The closest that iPad display manufacturers like LG and Samsung can get is 2048x1536 resolution display, according to the source,” said Crothers on CNET, a technology website. “That’s a PPI of 264, twice the 132 PPI on the iPad 2.
Crothers also reported on the mass production of new parts for the upcoming Apple tablet.
“But whether manufacturers can make them in volumes that Apple demands is the question,” she said. “They have production plans for 2,084x1536 displays starting in November. But those are only plans at this point,” said her source referring to LG and Samsung.
The new hardware may be difficult to mass-produce, according to Crother’s source.
“It’s not a question of making just one. That, of course, can be done. The challenge is making lots of them,” said her source. “This is a quantum leap in pixel density. This hasn’t been done before.”
The insider also explained the possibility of Apple downgrading the display to a 1600x12000 resolution if production needs are not met in a timely fashion.
This new display is expected to have a brightness of 550 nits. The typical laptop display is 350 nits.
The iPad 3, according to most industry analysts, is to be released sometime in mid-2012.
