iPad LTE: AT&T Vs. Verizon, Which One Has Better Service?
With the release of the new LTE iPad, consumers cannot help but wonder what carrier will be better to optimize their experience on the tablet.
The two networks that will be carrying the tablet are Verizon and AT&T, who are no strangers to Apple devices.
Apple entrusted AT&T back in 2007 with the original iPhone, and once again with the original iPad in 2010. Verizon entered into the iPhone market in the beginning of 2011. So which of these two is really the better choice to use for the new iPad?
There is actually a fair amount of pros for each network.
Verizon would be the better choice for iPad owners doing a lot of traveling since Verizon's LTE network is more established than AT&T's. It covers a wide range of areas and works well in rural locations since it can revert back to the carrier's EV-DO 3G network.
AT&T, on the other hand, is just bringing LTE to certain areas, with New York City being one of the latest. Rural areas that are not equipped for LTE will revert AT&T customers back to 2G, which is only good for checking emails since the carrier has not created HSPA+ coverage for those places.
It would render the new iPad useless.
However, AT&T has other advantages. For those living in major cities, the LTE network for the carrier is not nearly as congested with Android devices as Verizon is. This is due to the fact that Verizon's network has been around much longer and is home to many LTE Android smartphones and tablets. AT&T would function better where both networks are readily available.
AT&T also holds the advantage in areas that have no LTE at all since it can back up the device with its 4G HSPA+ network. Verizon's EV-DO Rev. A network tops out between 2 and 3 Mbps where AT&T's HSPA+ can see bursts as high as 10Mbps. This makes AT&T the logical choice, but customers should contact both carriers first to find out if and when LTE will be arriving in their area.
