iPhone 5 Could Be 20-Percent Thinner with Gorilla Glass 2 (VIDEO)
The next iteration of Gorilla Glass will not only present stronger protection for future devices, but it will also make them slimmer.
Yesterday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the Corning company unveiled Gorilla Glass 2. Gorilla Glass is known for being super-strong, damage-resistant glass cover that is featured in an array of tablets, smartphones, and other devices.
In a press release for Gorilla Glass 2, Corning stated that while its product is 20-percent thinner than its predecessor, it doesn't lose any of its strength.
This new protective glass will also introduce slimmer, thinner devices. Future devices will also be able to present brighter images and increased sensitivity to touch. This means Apple’s rumored iPhone 5 and iPad 3 devices may feature thinner designs.
Corning has announced partnerships with several device makers that will include Gorilla Glass 2 in their gadgets this year. Acer and Asus both announced that they will use Gorilla Glass 2 in their upcoming products.
Gorilla Glass 2 will also be featured in new Windows-based PC’s for Microsoft.
Gorilla Glass first appeared in 2007. Corning claimed that it's the most widely used cover glass for smartphone and tablet devices today. It is currently deployed to more than 575 devices from more than 30 different companies.
"We knew Corning Gorilla Glass could get even better. So in response to our customers' drive toward thinner form factors, we designed this new glass to enable meaningful reduction in thickness without sacrificing the outstanding glass performance for which Gorilla Glass has become highly recognized," Corning Senior Vice President and General Manager James Steiner said in a statement.
"Handset and tablet device manufacturers are clearly driving towards higher functionality from thinner designs," said James R. Steiner, senior vice president and general manager of Corning Specialty Materials. "Corning’s latest innovation in Gorilla Glass technology is very well positioned to meet these challenges and enable broader touch technology presentation."
