iPhone 5 Release Date: 1M Pre-Orders for iPhone 4S in 24 Hours
Apple’s online store has officially sold out of pre-orders for the upcoming iPhone 4S. The fifth generation smartphone has garnered considerable popularity since its unveiling, with customers submitting more than one million pre-orders in just 24 hours.
“We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S,” said Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, Philip Schiller, in an official statement by Apple Monday.
“The first day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched and we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do.”
The popularity of the iPhone 4S was put into question after its Oct. 4 unveiling as many who were anticipating the iPhone 5 were considering the 4S simply an upgrade of the iPhone 4.
However, commentators are now saying that the recent death of Apple co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs may have aided in the newfound interest in the phone.
Jobs passed away on Oct. 5 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
AT&T has also reported that the iPhone 4S received 200,000 pre-orders during the first 12 hours of availability on its network alone.
The iPhone 4 received a record breaking 600,000 pre-orders during its release in June 2010.
Pre-orders for the iPhone 4S began on Oct. 7 and the phone will be available for purchase and shipping on Oct. 14.
Before the unveiling of the iPhone 4S, when there still hopes of an iPhone 5 being released, analysts suggested that the proposed smartphone would easily outsell its predecessor's initial three-day sales record of 1.7 million handsets.
With the budding interest in the iPhone 4S, the smartphone may now take over the anticipation that was projected for the iPhone 5.
