iPhone 5 Release Date: iPhone 4S AT&T Pre-Order App Taken Down

An app released in the aftermath of Apple's recent unveiling of the iPhone 4S, allowing AT&T customers to check eligibility for upgrades to the new device, as well as allowing pre-ordering, has been taken down.

AT&T quickly set up the infrastructure to allow its customers to check whether they are eligible for an "iPhone 4S" upgrade. The network carrier also allowed customers to schedule a pre-order through the app, even though the pre-order schedule should not begin until Friday.

However, the app has since been taken down by the company. It was titled "AT&T Upgrader."

After Apple's "Let's Talk iPhone" media event concluded, news of the company's brand new "iPhone 4S" quickly spread. AT&T then released the application for current "iPhone 4" owners who also have a contract with AT&T.

This app allowed users to see how much they will have to spend on the "iPhone 4S."

The pre-order option is officially set to begin on Friday, Oct. 7.

The cellphone carrier also has apps, such as myAT&T. Users can use this app to view and manage their AT&T accounts.

AT&T Mark The Spot allows users to report dead zones and dropped calls directly to AT&T's network operations team.

AT&T customers have other options. AT&T owners of the "iPhone 4" can choose to sell back their smartphone models in preparation for the "iPhone 4S."

NextWorth is offering its customers $250 for their AT&T "iPhone 4" if it’s in good condition, powers on and fully functional, with no cracked display.

Gazelle.com is buying back the smartphone at $284 for the 32GB iPhone 4 in flawless condition, and $264 for the 16GB version.

AT&T customers are said to be anticipating the release of the "iPhone 4S" with a mild interest, though. Apple's latest smartphone only comes with improved camera capabilities, the Siri Assistant feature with voice recognition, and an A5 processing chip.

Many analysts were said to be disappointed in the smartphone, too. BGC Partners' analyst Colin Gillis said, "It's been 16 months and all you've got is an A5 processor in the existing iPhone 4. It's a mild disappointment, but they're still going to be selling millions of units."

For those who don't have a contract with AT&T, they can pre-order the "iPhone 4S" by visiting AT&T's iPhone upgrade page at www.att.com/phoneupgrade.

Verizon and AT&T customers can also check upgrade eligibility and pre-order's on Apple's website.
