iPhone 5 Release Date: iPhone 4S Pre-Orders Sold Out Thanks to Steve Jobs
Apple’s online store has officially sold out of pre-orders for the upcoming iPhone 4S that will ship on October 14.
Shipping estimates on the company’s site have now changed to 1 to 2 weeks which means the only way for consumers to get their hands on the new smartphone is to wait in line next Friday.
There are already three people standing in line in front of the Apple Store on 5th Avenue in New York City with many more expected in the coming days.
This iPhone 4S launch is the most successful Apple smartphone release to date.
AT&T announced yesterday that it processed 200,000 pre-orders for the iPhone 4S within the first 12 hours of sales.
AT&T began offering pre-orders around midnight on Oct. 7.
Other carriers such as Verizon and Sprint also started selling pre-orders for the iPhone 4S yesterday.
Those two service providers have been projected to have sold over 100,000 pre-orders each respectively.
Despite disappointed reactions to the smartphone’s launch, the iPhone 4S seems to be well on its way to dominating the smartphone market and taking the place of the current leader, the iPhone 4.
A number of commentators are already suggesting that the successful pre-orders are in a large way due to the fact that Steve Jobs, the mastermind behind the iPhone, passed away just a day after the new handset was announced.
Apple fans are giving a fitting tribute to the man who changed technology forever.
The unlocked iPhone 4S will also go on sale in just a few weeks.
The unlocked versions will only be compatible with AT&T’s networks in the United States since the smartphone has been described as ‘GSM networks only.’
The iPhone 4S is expected to perform at two times the speed of the iPhone 4, and sport an 8-megapixel camera which Apple says rivals most point-and-shoot models.
