iPhone 5 Release Date: Siri to Revolutionize How You Watch Television?
Siri, Apple’s new voice navigation system, will debut on the iPhone 4S when it is released later on this week, and the feature may become compatible with Apple TV in the near future, according to 9to5Mac.
“One interesting application of the Siri technology would be with Apple TV,” wrote Cross Research analyst, Shannon Cross. “We think this would solve the industry’s difficulties with remote controls … We think it would be very compelling to own a TV or a device that could quickly answer the request.”
Cross points out the convenience Siri would bring to watching television.
No more worrying about remote controls being lost in the seat cushions of a couch since a user would be able to change channels by speaking into the set.
With Apple debuting this on the new iPhone, it is only a matter of time before the company implements it into its Apple TV.
This could give Apple a great advantage over the current leaders in paid television including Time Warner, Verizon Fios and DirectTV.
Cross also notes that Siri on a television could be multifunctional since it is connected to the internet.
“Finally, since you are online, a Siri enabled TV could answer whether your iPhone or computer has received a new message, and let you respond accordingly,” she wrote.
AppleTV’s current set-top box is not capable of running Siri since it only has a A4 processor.
A significant upgrade in hardware would be required if the company was to move ahead with plans to begin navigating through channels by voice.
9to5Mac reports that there is a possibility Apple is testing a new version of Apple TV using an A5 chip which means it will have 1080p HD playback and potential for Siri.
