iPhone 5 Vs. Galaxy S3: Android Handset Takes Top Spot in UK
The iPhone 5 vs. the Galaxy S3 has been one of the most talked about smartphone battles since the new Apple handset launched last month.
Samsung seems to have secured one significant victory in the U.K. as the smartphone is still the number one device in the nation despite the release of the iPhone 5.
The data used to determine the winner was compiled by Mobile Tracker report from uSwitch. It shows that the latest figures of U.K. handset pre-orders and sales. It found that despite the mass excitement surrounding the recent Sept. 21 iPhone launch, the Galaxy S3 has remained the leading handset in the U.K. for the past month.
Even with Apple reporting the 5 million iPhone 5 units that were sold during the launch weekend, the smartphone ended up only being the fifth most popular device in U.K. popularity charts.
The new iPhone even placed behind its predecessor, the 4S, which was the second most popular handset in the U.K. last month. The low sales of the iPhone 5 in the U.K. could be due to device shortages and other issues discouraging buyers from getting their hands on one.
"Everyone expected the iPhone 5 to knock the Samsung Galaxy S3 off the top spot as the nation's favorite phone, but that hasn't happened yet," said Ernest Doku, a telecoms expert at uSwitch. "After six generations of Apple phones, the excitement around the iPhone 5 has failed to convert into immediate sales, but cynics should take note, this is the thinnest, lightest, fastest best-looking iPhone ever."
He also predicts that Apple will "sneak up the ranks" in the coming weeks, but for now Samsung holds the top spot.
The fact that the iPhone was only available for nine days of September also has to be taken into consideration.
